PREVIOUS CONFERENCES

La France de Vichy: an ever-present past? The SNCF and Holocaust memory in contemporary France.

Friday 11th November 2011 , 7-9pm, Exeter
We are delighted to welcome Thomas Beaumont , PhD Student at Exeter University, who will present this conference followed by a discussion and a drink.

To what extent does the legacy of the Vichy-era remain a potent force in contemporary French society? How have the histories of resistance and collaboration been forged and contested in post-war French society? What role does the memory of the Holocaust play in modern French understandings of the ‘Dark Years’ of German occupation? Through an examination of the changing perceptions of the nationally owned French railway company (the SNCF), from the initial celebration of its resistance and sabotage of the railway network to contemporary debates surrounding its role in the transportation of thousands of Jews to Auschwitz, this paper explores the complex processes through which French society has grappled with its wartime past.

Presentation in English and discussion carried out in French or English.

Price: £3 with a glass of wine! (advanced booking recommended)
Venue: 8 Richmond Road EX4 4JA. Second Floor (without lift)

La France de 1940: L'EXODE

Laure Humbert, PhD Student at Exeter University will present a one hour conference followed by a discussion and a drink on the subject:
La France de 1940: l'exode.
Why did so many people decide to leave their homes convinced that the danger they might face on the road was nothing compared to the risk of living side by side with Hitler’s troops? How did French refugees cope with the lack of accommodation, running water, food supplies on the road? Did this mass exodus play a significant role in the military defeat, as many early commentators suggested ? Presentation and discussion carried out in French.
Price: £3 with a glass of wine! (advanced booking recommended)
